Brittany Frompovich, founder/organizer of the Virginia Bass Forum, will present Bassist Christian “Big New York” de Mesones at Forte Music Studios at 3:30 on Sunday, March 16.  Frompovich, a music teacher and performer, of Fredericksburg, hosts guest musicians and speakers for the public at Forum events throughout the year.  The Forum with de Mesones is sponsored by Warwick Guitars, which is a German company known for its hand-made guitars, that endorses him.

“Anybody who plays or aspires to play the bass, as well as those people who appreciate music, will enjoy hearing Christian de Mesones’ presentation and performance,” said Frompovich.  “He is a talented and seasoned artist who has performed with dozens of renowned musicians.  Attendees will learn so much from him, as he shares his years of experience and knowledge.”

de Mesones, who has been playing bass guitar for more than 30 years, will present “Slap Happy " Building Grooves Using Right & Left Hand Techniques.”  He will share his personal approach using examples, such as altered tunings, palm muting, double stops, hammer ons and lift offs, ghost notes, and left-and-right-hand slaps.

Only 18-years-old when he graduated from the world-famous Bass Institute of Technology (now the Musician’s Institute) in Hollywood, CA, he studied and took workshops with bass greats Louis Johnson, Ray Brown, Abraham Laboriel and others.  He performed an original composition for his graduation by personal request from visiting guitar faculty member and legendary jazz guitarist Pat Martino.

Part of several musical groups from around the country, de Mesones has performed a variety of musical styles.  He played the military club circuit in a hard rock cover band in Oahu before forming the heavy metal band Twice Shy in the mid-1980s, where it became a staple of the local New York Metal scene, sharing the stage with acts like Twisted Sister and White Lion.

When he moved to Richmond, VA, in 1995, de Mesones “laid tracks” for local hip hop artists, played with various groups (performing rhythm & blues, Caribbean, Latin and smooth jazz) and performed with Big Patt & Legion, opening for several national recording artists.  A show with Roberta Flack on Brown’s Island (in Richmond) drew an audience of more than 33,000, making it the largest recorded attendance for an outdoor Richmond music event in history to that date.

de Mesones has been a resident of Lake Ridge, VA, since 2003, where he teaches bass guitar at A2G Music.  Other highlights of his career include performing with his smooth jazz band, “Groove Skool,” at Capital Jazz, one of the largest jazz festivals in the country, and the band’s first CD, “Limited Edition,” which received international radio play and produced a Top 10 most-requested song (“Latin Jive”) on the radio.radio.es network in Mallorca, Spain.  “Groove Skool,” which sold out its debut at the Blues Alley Supper Club in Washington, DC, regularly plays at the K2 Restaurant and Lounge in Woodbridge, VA.  The band performed at the 2nd Street Festival in Richmond, the Lake Arbor Jazz Festival in Maryland and in New York City.

In 2008, de Mesones created “Bass Symphony:  Celebrating the Gift of Music through the Spirit of Youth,” a non-profit event that showcased middle and high school students performing original compositions for 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, and 12-string electric and upright basses in concert.  de Mesones, who is endorsed by Warwick Guitars and Framus (a German guitar, bass, lap steel guitar and banjo manufacturing company), will release his first solo CD in fall 2014.

Open to the public, “Slap Happy " Building Grooves Using Right & Left Hand Techniques with Christian de Mesones, will be held at Forte Music Studios, 1691 Jefferson Davis Highway, in Fredericksburg.  Tickets are $15 in advance through www.ladybassmusic.net and $20 at the door.
